- Description
- Margaret Shiels interviews Transport Secretary, Cecil Parkinson about a survey which shows that three-quarters of Londoners want better public transport and tougher restrictions on the use of cars rather than new roads. The Gallop study, commissioned by five councils, reveals public rejection of the Government’s justifications for new road building in London. Half those questioned thought drivers would switch to public transport if the service was better and parking restrictions were enforced. Parkinson said he would like to see how many people would actually leave their cars at home if public transport was improved. He also dismisses the idea of a congestion charge.
