- The USA has given a 6-month waiver of the Jackson-Vanik Amendment to the Soviet Union. US President, George Bush and Defence Secretary, James Baker on what the change means. Bush says the US has a stake in Soviet Union stability and wants perestroika to succeed. A date has been agreed for a superpower summit to be held in Moscow, with hopes of signing START (Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty) and so reducing stockpiles of long-range nuclear weapons.
