Sir Terence Beckett, Managing Director of the Ford motor company, criticises the unions’ refusal to discuss the efficiency of the workforce. Beckett claims that Ford is doing all it can to support the British economy but that the unions have broken their word. General Secretary of the Amalgamated Engineering and Electrical Union, John Boyd admits to ITN that Beckett has a technical point but adds that Ford should have been more forthcoming during negotiations.
