Today Chancellor Nigel Lawson faces the Treasury Select Committee, a powerful all-party group of MPs who are preparing their investigation into his autumn statement on public expenditure. His forecasts for inflation and the balance of trade will come under particular scrutiny and he will have an even tougher time of it than he did in the Commons, where, according to former Prime Minister Edward Heath, he failed to convince even his own backbenchers that all was well with his handling of the economy.
