- The Conservative Government has overcome a revolt against the UK joining the European Exchange Rate Mechanism by winning endorsement by 300 votes to 227. During a debate in the House of Commons, Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher allows Chancellor John Major to justify the timing of the decision to join the ERM.
