- Salman Rushdie’s novel The Satanic Verses has been voted winner in the novel section of the Whitbread Literary awards but only made the shortlist of the Booker Prize. There have been rumours since the Booker ceremony that Rushdie was considering emigrating to America. After today’s ceremony, Carol Allen asked the author if there’s any truth in them. And he comments on the effect of awards on sales of books.
