Description
James Matthews reports on the shooting of two Manchester policemen. Inspector Raymond Codling died and Sergeant James Bowden was injured after being shot by Anthony Hughes at a motorway service station (14/09/89). Hughes later shot himself after being surrounded by armed police. It now appears that he was intent on wounding or killing a policeman. Hughes had a long criminal record, which included armed robbery, and had spent fifteen years in prison - now questions are being asked as to how such a person could obtain a gun. During his time in prison, Hughes built up an intense hatred of the police and his stepfather is convinced that when he left home prior to the shooting, he appeared to be on a mission of revenge. Includes interviews with stepfather, Walter Krei; Paul Stelfox, Diggle rifle range warden.
