Margaret Shiels reports on the case of a man who shot himself after being surrounded by armed police officers on the roof of a garage in Kendray, Barnsley. Police had traced the man to the building at the end of a nationwide hunt for the killer of Inspector Raymond Codling, who was killed with a handgun at the Birch service area on the M62 (14/09/89). His colleague Sergeant James Bowden was also shot and needed emergency surgery. The dead man was later named as Anthony Hughes.
