Following the Piper Alpha disaster in which an explosion on a North Sea oil platform killed 167 people, a report from the Department of Energy’s Director of Safety, Jim Petrie, has prompted different reponses. Shadow Energy Secretary, John Prescott says that it shows that safety standards have been allowed to slip, but Energy Secretary, Cecil Parkinson refutes this claim. Report by Peter Spencer.
