- Description
- Speaking after the party conference in Torquay, the leader of the re-formed Social Democratic Party (SDP), Dr David Owen, discusses the introduction of proportional representation and claims that the Conservatives are a minority party that can be beaten by the formation of coalitions. He references Neil Kinnock, Margaret Thatcher and the SDP’s Rosie Barnes and John Cartwright. He says that SDP policies are left and right of centre on different issues but cites left-wing governments - including that of Mikhail Gorbachev - who are introducing market economics which does not affect their political standing. Interview by political editor Peter Murphy.
