- Description
- An elaborate and lengthy ceremony at the White House this evening set the seal on a new peace agreement for the Middle East. If everything goes according to plan, it will bring about an end to Israel’s 28-year occupation of the West Bank, and extend Palestinian self rule in the region. The agreement was signed by Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat under the satisfied eye of President Clinton, and they were joined in Washington by King Hussein of Jordan (Hussein bin Talal), Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, and other world leaders. They all talked about the historic moment they were witnessing, but serious doubts remain as to whether the peace treaty can be implemented. From Washington, Simon Marks reports.
