Description

The German unification treaty has been signed in East Germany by East Germany’s State Secretary, Gunter Krause, and West Germany’s Federal Minister of the Interior, Wolfgang Schauble. In the absence of West German Chancellor, Helmut Kohl, the signing was witnessed by the East German Prime Minister, Lothar de Maizaire(?). The signing of the treaty was almost held up over issues on abortion and the storage of files from East Germany’s Secret Police. Catherine Field reports.
