- Prime Minister John Major visits Hong Kong, and gives a speech claiming his criticised visit to Peking was vital in the run-up to the handover of the colony to China in 1997. He reassures the people of Hong Kong the British have signed a treaty giving Hong Kong all of it’s freedoms for another 50 years and says Britain and Hong Kong will remain staunch allies and keep economic ties. He claims the entire British government agree Britain needs to protect Hong Kong’s interests.
