Two excerpts from a press statement by former US President, Jimmy Carter during a personal peace mission to the former Yugoslavia. Following his visit to Sarajevo where he met with Bosnian government officials, Carter is travelling to the Bosnian Serb headquarters in Pale. Jimmy Carter says he has made progress in finding a lasting political solution to the conflict, although he says the protection of human rights is also an important issue. He says the five-nation Contact Group (USA, Russia, Britain, France, and Germany) is essential to a settlement.
