- Description
- Two men have been jailed for life for their part in the savage murders of the British Army corporals who strayed into the path of an IRA funeral procession in Belfast last year. Alex Murphy and Henry Maguire were trapped by TV and Army helicopter film which showed Corporals Derek Wood and David Howes being beaten, stripped and then shot dead. Lord Chief Justice Sir Brian Hutton said the two signalmen had been viciously attacked and left in a pitiable and defenceless state before they were shot dead by two gunmen on waste ground. Maguire and Murphy were sentenced to life imprisonment with a recommendation that they serve at least twenty-five years. Reporter is John Alcock. With accounts of witnesses Mary Holland and Robert Toner.
