Barry McGuigan’s boxing career came to an end last night when he announced his retirement following a defeat by Londoner, Jim McDonnell. The Irishman suffered a badly cut right eye early on in the super featherweight bout, which became so bad that the referee stopped the fight in the fourth round. McGuigan carried out his pre-fight promise that defeat would mean the end of his career, although he criticised the referee for lack of protection. For McDonnell though, the future is much rosier and his manager Barry Hearn is confident of setting up his second world title fight. Male interviewer not identified.
