Description
Port employers have been dealt a body blow in their legal battle to avert a national docks strike. A high court judge has thrown out an application to temporarily block the threatened stoppage. Dockers are furious that the national dock labour scheme is to be scrapped, and they are failing to persuade their employers to negotiate a new country-wide agreement. The port authorities say the dispute is political, but judge Mr Justice Millett has rejected that claim. He has, however, ordered the unions not to strike until an appeal gets under way this week. Lynne Mennie reports. Bill Morris of the TGWU, and Stuart Bradley of Associated British Ports comment.
