- Description
- Yesterday, UK Prime Minister John Major unveiled the Government’s plans to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the end of World War II. Today, he was present as a weekend of events planned for the 19th and 20th of August was unveiled. There has been pressure from ex-prisoners of war, such as Harold Hain, President of the Federation of Far Eastern Prisoner of War Clubs, to make the occasion a time of commemoration, rather than celebration, but Viscount Slim, President of the Burma Star Association and member of the ministerial steering committee for the World War II commemorations, says he’s convinced they’ve hit the right note. John Major, meanwhile, avoids questions about the Tory leadership campaign. Paul Chapman reports.
