Description
Washington correspondent Nick Peters reports on Marion Barry, Mayor of Washington, who is currently on trial on drugs and perjury charges having been addicted to alcohol and cocaine. Barry will not be seeking re-election; instead, he plans to serve his community and God in other ways, for example by helping addicts. He made his television announcement on Channel 32, broadcasting from the predominantly black Howard University. Barry says he is a victim of a media conspiracy and of racism. He talks about his addictions, and outlines how much he has improved the city (although this is debatable). He also pays tribute to his supporters.
