Simon Bowden interviews Lord Ackner (Desmond Ackner), a Lord of Appeal, about Government plans to reform the legal profession. He warns there’ll be a drastic reduction in the number of small solicitors firms, because of the ending of the monopoly over conveyancing, and also claims changing the role of barristers - who would be supervised by government officers - would undermine the independence of lawyers and ultimately of judges.
