- Description
- Report on musical fundraising effort initiated by novelist and former politician Jeffrey Archer. Just after the Gulf War, as Kurdish refugees fled to the mountains, the five-hour telethon was broadcast in 36 countries, raising 15 million dollars. The main concert was staged at Wembley, with five satellite sites beaming concerts from around the world. This allowed artists on tour in the USA, Australia, the Netherlands and the UK to help the Red Cross provide aid to Kurdish refugees. Archer organised the music festival and here he discusses the feat. With contributions from musician Chris de Burgh; Prime Minister John Major (who comments on the performance of MC Hammer); and Director-General of the Red Cross in Britain, Mike Whitlam. Male reporter not identified.
