- Description
- Britain has issued a strong warning that NATO has to stand firm on the need to modernise short-range nuclear weapons. The Defence white paper published today fires off a salvo at the West Germans who want to negotiate with the Warsaw Pact, and Defence Secretary George Younger is stressing that these weapons must be retained because the Soviet Union remains a military threat with vast superiority in conventional forces, but at a news conference he was asked about reports in the German press that a compromise with the West Germans might be reached, and indeed, he hinted that there might be such a compromise. As Younger told Kevin Murphy, he is certain that there will be agreement at the NATO summit in a months time.
