- Description
- Furious offshore oil workers are calling for a twenty-four hour strike on the first anniversary of the Piper Alpha disaster. They say a stoppage on July the sixth would be a reminder to the Government that its health and safety record still needs urgent improvement. A series of meetings are being held in Aberdeen, Glasgow and Middlesborough this month to plan a new campaign for health, safety and welfare, following claims by workers that the major oil companies have done little to improve safety since the tragedy. Bob Ballantyne, who survived the accident in which one hundred and sixty-seven men died, says a stoppage of some sort would be a suitable mark of respect. (Scottish) male reporter not identified.
