- The minister responsible for bringing the community charge into operation, David Hunt, takes over today as the new Secretary of State for Wales from Peter Walker who announced his intention of stepping down earlier this year. David Hunt was born in North Wales in May 1942 and became MP for the Wirral in March 1976. He is a member of the Tory Reform Group and is another wet appointment to Margaret Thatcher’s cabinet. He replaces the man who has been the leading Wet in the cabinet, Peter Walker, to whom he pays a glowing tribute on his achievements at the Welsh Office. Interviewer is Des Fahy.
