Press conference featuring Prison Officers Association chairman David Evans, following a report by Sir Louis Blom-Cooper into conditions at Ashworth Special Hospital on Merseyside. His investigations were launched as a result of a television documentary showing conditions in the hospital and the attitudes of some of the staff. Sir Louis found widespread violence and abuse of patients both physically and psychologically, including racist abuse, some of it fuelled by members of the staff who were also members of the British National Party and the National Front. Evans says the report’s findings are grossly distorted and he is condemning the decision to suspend seven of his members as a result of the inquiry.
