Former Liberal leader David Steel has bowed out of the race for the leadership of the Social and Liberal Democrats. The two frontrunners are Steel’s former deputy, Alan Beith, and the favourite, Yeovil MP Paddy Ashdown. Steel made his announcement at a meeting of his Scottish Borders constituency in Galashiels. David Johnston was there, and spoke to the former party leader. For AM programme.
