The Prime Minister John Major defended DSS office and staff cutback plans at Question Time today, claiming that the cuts would help those on benefits - but this is a claim dismissed by civil servants’ unions. Pat Heron from the Public Services, Tax and Commerce Union says Social Security Secretary Peter Lilley won’t be using savings to raise benefits, and service to claimants will inevitably get worse.
