Description
Report on a statement from British Aerospace Chief Executive Admiral Sir Raymond Lygo on the alleged role of Trade Secretary Leon Brittan in the Westland Helicopters affair. Lygo recalled what appears to have been a barely concealed warning by Brittan that British Aerospace sales to America could be damaged because of the company’s support for the European rescue bid for Westland. At one point, Mr Brittan said the continuing campaign by British Aerospace was against the national interest and that they should withdraw. observes that all this was in contrast to what Brittan told the House of Commons. Lygo said that the meeting between him and Brittan was conducted in an unpleasant atmosphere and immediately afterwards he made notes of what went on and signed them as a true record. Includes excerpts from a House of Commons reply by Leon Brittan. Male reporter not identified (poss. Kevin Murphy).
