- Description
- Report on the US Marines leaving Lebanon. There has been confusion and anger in US congressional circles concerning the method and timing of the redeployment. Representative Stephen Solarz, a Democrat from New York, lashed out at US Secretary of State, George Shultz. Shultz explains that it was a balanced decision to reduce the exposure of men on the ground. US intelligence sources indicate that the naval shelling has been very successful, killing a Syrian senior commander and demolishing the Syrian communications centre. US Defence Secretary Caspar Weinberger tells the White House that the USA is not withdrawing from Lebanon. Senator John Glenn says it is extending the tragedy and Walter Mondale agrees. President Ronald Reagan is currently on holiday at his Californian ranch near Santa Barbara. Male reporter not identified.
