- Description
- Arthur Scargill, President of the National Union of Mineworkers, has attended an executive meeting at the NUM headquarters in Sheffield. He says the NEC condemn the announcement of further pit and plant closures over the next 12 months. The Coal Board’s decision would amount to a closure of half the pits in Scotland, South Nottinghamshire, and North Derbyshire, and an even larger proportion in the North East, and South Wales. Areas such as Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire, and the Midlands, as well as workshops, transport departments and offices of clerical staff will all be affected. Scargill lays the blame at the door of Ian MacGregor, head of the National Coal Board. He then announces that the NEC has declared strike action official.
