- The swearing-in of President-elect, George Herbert Walker Bush as forty-first President of the United States of America, together with his inaugural speech; preceded by the swearing-in as Vice-President of James Danforth Quayle. Bush makes a speech to the American people, in which he states his main aim to pursue freedom in America and the rest of the world. He intends to fight crime, and to address social problems, especially drug abuse. Taking part in the proceedings are the Senator of Alaska, Ted Stevens; Staff Sergeant Albie Powell, who sings God Bless America; Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, Sandra O’Connor, who administers the oath of office to Quayle; Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist, who administers the oath of office to Bush.
