US Secretary of State James Baker has been meeting with British Foreign Secretary Douglas Hurd in advance of his meeting with the Iraqi Foreign Minister Tariq Aziz in Geneva in a last ditch effort to prevent war in the Gulf as the 15th January UN deadline for Iraq to withdraw from Kuwait approaches. In this press conference, Hurd says he and Baker are in total agreement. Baker insists his meeting with Tariq Aziz is not a negotiation but a communication.
