- Description
- Peter Deeley hosts a discussion on the future of London government: should there be a single strategic authority, perhaps along the lines of the now defunct GLC, or a democratically elected mayor? In the studio are Margaret Hodge, Labour MP for Barking; Steven Norris, Conservative MP for Epping Forest; Michael Cassidy, Corporation of London. Bob Worcester of MORI also contributes, and reporter Paul Chapman conducts vox pops with the London public, who appear broadly in favour of a simplified single strategic authority. The role of Margaret Thatcher in the GLC’s demise is considered, along with the effect it had on her popularity. The studio guests are asked, would they stand for mayor if invited to do so?
