- Description
- Mark Phillips reports from Lambeth Palace on a statement by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr George Carey, following a diplomatic row between Britain and the Sudan. The Sudanese Ambassador has been ordered to leave the UK, in retaliation for the deportation of Peter Streams, the British envoy in Khartoum. Streams was ordered out after a row over the Archbishop of Canterbury’s visit to the former British colony. Carey went to the region to visit an estimated ten thousand Anglicans who live in the Sudan. He says he was forced to cancel a visit to Khartoum because his freedom of movement was not guaranteed but denies that he was interfering in affairs of state. Includes excerpts from his statement.
