- Description
- Winchester Week [inserts] Ocean Sound West. A city tour in Winchester for one week, starting on 19 January 1987 and subsequently every day, to know more about this place that was the first capital of England. TRACK 1- St Cross. TRACK 2- Winchester Walks. TRACK 3- Cathedral Tower - Did you know that Winchester Cathedral is not only one of the oldest in England, but one of the longest too? It is strange, then, that it has such a short tower. There is a reason, though, as local expert Joy Humphries explains. Listen out for more about Winchester in Jean-Paul’s programme this afternoon at 2:20, when we will be attempting to see through the red tape that tying up the M3 extension. TRACK 4- M3 route. TRACK 5- St Swithun - We are nearing the time of year when St Swithuns day comes around. You know the legend - if it rains on St Swithuns Day [15th of July], it will rain for 40 days and 40 nights afterwards. You might not realize that St Swithuns was a real person, and the reason behind the legend is based on fact. Joy Humphries explains. Join us tomorrow on Ocean Sound West for more on the city of Winchester, when Mark Flanagan’s show comes live from the Thomas Cook travel shop in Winchester High Street, between 9am and 1pm. TRACK 6- Peninsular Barracks - We look to the future of Winchester this afternoon - it is a city with a fabulous long past, and a great future, as Chief Executive of the city council, David Cowan explains, change is slow but sure. At 4:20pm, we will be visiting one of the top schools in the country, Winchester College. TRACK 7- Winchester College. TRACK 8- Mary Tudor’s wedding - Continuing our tour of Winchester, England’s original Capital City, we take you back to the 16th Century for the story of an extraordinary wedding. Here is the local expert Joy Humphries. At 12:20 we will be visiting Winchester prison, only for a short stretch, though!. TRACK 9- Winchester Prison - It is time now to meet one man in Winchester who spends all his working life behind bars: only during office hours, though. He is Vay Roberts, the governor of Winchester Prison. There is a faction which claims that 3 good meals a day, warmth, and modern comforts like TV is tantamount to cossetting the modern-day prisoner. So does Mr Roberts believe his prisoners have an easy life? Join Jean-Paul at 2:20pm to find out why Queen Emma had to walk over hot irons to prove her innocence in a case of adultery! TRACK 10- Queen Emma - Time now to learn more about the history of Winchester - the story of Queen Emma. She married Ethelred the unready, then married King Canute, and one of her sons was Edward the Confessor. As Joy Humphries explains, she knew which side her bread was buttered. At 4:20pm we return to Winchester College, and learn that the school for top people still has remnants of its very own language. TRACK 11- Winchester College [school, different from track 7] - We learnt some of the history of Winchester College yesterday afternoon. Today, we return to this, one of the top public schools in the country, to talk to its headmaster, James Sabben-Clare. It turns out that despite radical reforms in the 1960s, the Wickhamists still retain a few of their traditions. Join us on Ocean Sound West tomorrow at 10:20; 12:20; 2:20pm and 4:20pm and discover more about England’s original capital city. TRACK 12- Diver Bill - It is extraordinary, but once, not too long ago, Winchester Cathedral was saved from devastation by a deep sea diver. Why? Joy Humphries explains. At 12:20, we will be hearing how King Arthur’s Round Table is still in existence, and can be seen in Winchester. TRACK 13- Round Table - As we are discovering during Winchester Week, there is more history per square mile in the city than we can possibly cover in just a week, but there is one place we must visit - The Great Hall; because, according to local expert Joy Humphries, it contains King’s Arthur’s Round Table. But is it the real one? Join Jean-Paul Hansford at 2:20pm and 4:20pm for more on the original capital city - Winchester. TRACK 14- Hospital - As I have told you, Winchester was one of the first places in England to have a Hospital. It is the place we know as the Royal Hampshire County Hospital [which in actual fact celebrated its centenary last year] but it was originally founded by a canon of the cathedral. Building on city centre land is very difficult in Winchester. Why? Find out at 4:20pm. TRACK 15- Archaeology Quite often when new developments are started in the city centre, the building land is subjected to an archaeological dig. Is this a necessity? Joy Humphries... TRACK 16- Unemployment. TRACK 17-St Giles Hill. TRACK 18- Development. TRACK 19- St Cross [different from track 1]. TRACK 20- Traffic. [Box 9]
