OCEAN SOUND THIS WEEK NO. 29 Programme 29 of a weekly news and sports review called Ocean Sound This Week, broadcast by independent radio station Ocean Sound on 10 May 1987. Presented by MATT HOPPER. TRACK 1- CHRIS RIDER reports on local election results. Labour lose overall control in Southampton with now hung with Alliance holding balance of power. Southampton’s Labour Leader, ALAN WHITEHEAD says Mrs Thatcher has boxed herself in and must hold General Election soon. Southampton’s Alliance Leader. DIANA MADDOX says: Not too surprised at result. In Winchester, Tories lose overall control with Alliance gaining 8 seats. In Isle of Wight a bitter blow for Island’s would be Alliance MP MICHAEL YOUNG with capture by Tories of control of Medina and South Wight District Councils. YOUNG says Should not affect his chances in a General Election. JOHN BROWNE, MP for Winchester predicts General Election in June. In the rest of Hampshire Conservatives gain control of Fareham, lose control of Eastleigh, which is now hung but elsewhere in Hampshire remain in control. TRACK 2-PETER DE SAVARY is interviewed by JANE HILL about his New Horizons scheme for converting old naval housing estate in Rowner, Gosport, into flats for first time buyers. DE SAVARY explains that it was a unique opportunity for him to acquire 300 dwellings in one transaction in nice location with good accessibility. ZELDA BLAKEY reports on sale of ill-fated Portsdown Park flats, Portsmouth for 4 million pounds. Purchasers, Ideal Homes, will demolish flats and replace with quality housing. Councillor, TERRY GREGORY, Chairman of Portsmouth City Council’s Housing Committee says he is delighted with the deal. Ideal Homes Managing Director, DENNIS FROST, says when new houses are in place the old image will soon be forgotten. TRACK 3- Review of this week’s news and sport. News - KAREN WOODS reporting. Local election results - further comment. [See previous report on Band 1.] In Eastleigh, where council now hung, decisions will be taken on the Mayor’s casting vote but Chief Executive, MICHAEL BRAINSBY, says that things will be as much as usual. Chief Inspector DAVID HANNA, commenting on the Chief Constable of Hampshire’s Annual Report which shows a 5 percent increase in crime over the previous year, says that people in high rise flats are particularly vulnerable and should take extra precautions. Hampshire Senior Fire Officer, Ted Pearns, speaks about major blaze at Royal Pier, Southampton, which originated in disused Mecca Ballroom; 40 firemen assisted by 3 tugs were involved. Ideal Homes acquire Portsdown Park redundant flats for demolition and redevelopment. [See previous report on Band 2.] Sport - GUY PHILLIPS reporting. Pompey promoted to 1st Division by beating Oldham 2-0. 8,000 fans converge on Guildhall Square to celebrate. Pompey’s Manager, Alan Ball, choked with emotion. Winger, VINCE HILAIRE, says full of praise for supporters. TRACK 4- Captain KEN EDWARDS, commanding the Bounty, sailing from Portsmouth in a re-enactment of the First Fleet sailing to Australia with convicts 200 years ago is interviewed by BRIAN COOK. EDWARDS, an Australian, first got involved with square riggers in New South Wales when he helped to restore New Endeavour. On Bounty, there are 11 miles of line in 131 different varieties. David Essex sings Tahiti, from the musical Mutiny. TRACK 5- Associated British Ports spokesman, JULIAN GOLOGOLLY, speaks about plans for redevelopment of pier which had always been envisaged before the fire. Victoriana will blend happily with modern structures taking shape around it. In the USA a pier is called a boardwalk and The Drifters sing Under the Boardwalk. NIGEL GANN, Manager of Thornhill’s new Eastpoint Community Centre, talks about his plans. It is the first centre to be run by a private company. There is already plenty going on in the former Hightown Secondary School and with a substantial subsidy from Southampton City Council, the public will have many new leisure facilities.
