OCEAN SOUND THIS WEEK NO. 25 Programme 25 of a weekly news and sports review called Ocean Sound This Week, broadcast by independent radio station Ocean Sound on 12 April 1987. Presented by GUY HORNSBY. TRACK 1- HOWARD JONES sings New Song, a record which brought him to fame 3 years ago. He is interviewed by PETE WALDMAN and explains that he began his career when left college at 21 but did not get a break until he was 27. As a vegetarian and non-smoker, is he considered a goody goody of pop? Doesn’t think so. Interview concludes with Jones singing Things can only get Better. CHRIS CARNEGY reports on new ferry service between Portsmouth, Weymouth and Cherbourg. On board the Earl Granville, making the inaugural trip, TED SANGSTER, a spokesman for Sealink, speaks of greater choice and greater frequency for travellers. The ship sets sail to brass band and hooters. Whilst on ship’s bridge, ANDY NEWMAN of Sealink comments on good speed being made for a ship of only 4,500 tons. TRACK 2-JANE HILL interviews Cdr JACK BURKISS leading a team of Portsmouth based divers, before he starts on the difficult, distinctly unpleasant and dangerous mission of diving into the wreck on the ill-fated Herald of Free Enterprise, which foundered off Zeebruge with the loss of over 100 lives. Ship has now been de-contaminated but below the first 5 decks it will be very slippery and very dark. Search for bodies should take between 4 and 10 days, depending on problems encountered. JANE HILL reports on a big boost for jobs in Southampton with the acquisition of Vosper Ship Repairers by Thew Engineers whose Managing Director, TREVOR THEW says that there is every prospect of 200 jobs being saved. ALISON HOLT interviews PETER WALKER, a London businessman, who took out a 1 year lease from Gosport Borough Council for the Ritz Cinema and turned it into a success by providing good family entertainment. Has now obtained a 10 year lease and plans extensive improvements to heating, seating, decorations and other facilities. Commenting on demise of Havant’s Empire Cinema, WALKER says that a similar acquisition by Havant Borough and leasing back to local business interests might have saved it. RAY COBBETT, who spearheaded the campaign to keep the Empire open alleges that Cannon Cinemas deliberately let the Empire run down. TRACK 3- A review of this week’s news and sport. News - KAREN WOODS reporting. Navy spokesman, STUART READ. comments on furore raised by discovery of a bag of used medical supplies washed up on IOW beach. Bag should have been jettisoned in deep water. TREVOR THEW, Managing Director, of company which bought Vosper Ship Repairers says he is looking for suitable dry dock in Southampton. After 2 years closure, Blackgang, Isle of Wight Theme Park re-opens, having been relocated because of landslip. A Lee-on-Solent man celebrates his winning the Champion Sausage Maker contest held in the New Forest. Sport - GUY PHILLIPS reporting. Sugar RAY LEONARD out-points MARVIN HAGLOR in World Middle Weight Championship. HAGLOR interviewed is Furious. Southampton’s Football Club’s Manager, CHRIS NICHOLL, interviewed by ALAN JONES, accuses the Press of a campaign to vilify him. He is fighting to save his job. Southampton scores first away win in 5 months beating Manchester City 4-2. Centre Half, KEVIN BOND, says: I thought at one stage we were going to lose. Pompey beats Oldham Athletic 3-0 and is now 1 point behind Derby for top of 2nd Division. TRACK 4- MARK FLANAGAN interviews TOM QUINN, a Senior Staff Nurse at Royal Hampshire County Hospital, Winchester. QUINN says that 30,000 nurses are leaving the profession in a year because they cannot live on the pay. QUINN at present earns 6,700pa pounds and can eventually aspire to 10,000 pounds. Without parental help there is no chance of marrying and starting a family. QUINN is leaving to read law at Southampton University where he hopes to qualify as a solicitor. ALISON JOHNS interviews Dt Ch Inspector KEITH BURTON regarding a fierce fire which took hold of a house in Portswood Road, Southampton. Seat of fire was near the front door and police are treating the outbreak as suspicious. Neighbours are interviewed. House occupied by 45 year old mother and 4 children. ? Rescued. Ferry Aid sing Let it Be, this week’s Network No 1. TRACK 5- JEAN PAUL HANSFORD interviews MIA MITCHELL from the Isle of Wight who has already won Miss Isle of Wight and Miss Hampshire, and hopes to win Miss England and Miss Universe. She is professional model and advises girls who want to succeed in this kind of career to compile a professional portfolio and do the rounds of the model agencies. It is very hard work. 5 foot 9 inches is the minimum height. Men tend to be shy of model girls. Are beauty contests becoming unfashionable through the feminist movement? No. People still like to watch them on TV. Against a musical background of Kung Fu, GUY PHILLIPS interviews 11 year old THERESA DUREK, a Cowplain girl and the youngest in the South of England to win a Black Belt for Karate. It took her 2 years to train and with people 3 times her age. Instructor, BOB KARUWANA, says She’s a very tough customer! DUREK hopes to get even better and eventually to teach. PHILIP GROWTH of Lee-on-Solent [see BAND 3 News], declared Champion Sausage Maker in a New Forest contest, will now go through to the London championship. What is the secret of his success? Plenty of paprika and garlic and smoke the sausages overnight. [Box 9]
