The Business Programme, broadcast on Monday evenings and presented by Rob Thomas. Track 1- The plan is to bring sattelite television channels, video-games, home shopping and much else into the homes of Southampton area from next Summer. But before this can happen, the franchise East Southampton Cable Ltd. needs a large injection of capital to establish the cable network. Last week, it came the announcement that they had secured 35 million of pounds of funding, comprising equity of 10 and half millions held by Videotrom investment UK, a subsidiary of the Canadian Log Group Videotrom, together with Asian Company, plus a loan of 20 million organised by the First National Bank of Boston. Southampton Cable Chief Executive, Richard Trip, explains how the funds were arranged. Track 2- Interview with Sir Terrence Conran. The name of Conran came to the fore in the 1960 s, with a chain of Habitat shops, backed by a mailorder business. Now, Sir Terrence Conran has developed his empire to include BHS, Mothercare, Richards, Next and Beales. The chairman of the store house group was in Havant last week at the opening of a Habitat out of the town store. Sir Terrence Conran turns his mind back in the beginning of his business. He says that in 25 years, this country changed dramatically in its style of life and housing, design and decoration. Track 3- Welding industry/Cross channel. Interview with John Benson of Weld Fab Service. He talks about the history of the welding industry. He says that it is an industry in transition and is ready for the demand of the 90s. Another interview with 3 managers of the ferries companies across the channel. They talk about their concerns for transporting goods across the channel, and the infra-structure that has to be created to cope with the demand. [Box 8]
