ROSIE’S RUN ASHORE [Series RADIO VICTORY ARCHIVE] Transmission on Radio Victory on Wednesday 23 August 1978 at 21.45hrs which comprises of interviews with officers of ships open to the public on Portsmouth Navy days, Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday. TRACK 1- In - Music -This week culminates in Portsmouth Navy Days on Satuday, Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday. Programme will visit some of outstanding ships on display during weekend. LT CMDR PETER SWAN of aircraft carrier HMS Bulwark interviewed - describes ship’s history and various conversions. Public will be able to visit flight deck - good viewing point for air display. Considers future for Bulwark to be good. Music. LT SANDY POWELL of HM Submarine Opossum interviewed by telephone - gives details of ship and crew and of what public will be able to see - torpedo tubes and escape equipment, accomodation space for men and senior ranks, control room, with guide in each area. Out - Music. TRACK 2- In - Rosie’s Run Ashore ... LT MONTY FULLER of HMS Kent County Class Guided Missile Destroyer [publicity officer], interviewed - principle function of ship is to provide medium range air defence for the fleet - uses Sea Slug missiles and fighter aircraft. Description of ship and crew, and what public will be able to see on open day - most of ship except engine room. Hosted King of Sweden at recent visit to Stockholm. Music. SUB LT SIMON NICHOLSON of HMS Sheffield interviewed. Describes difference between HMS Sheffield and HMS Kent. Uses Sea Dart missiles - longer range, more refined. As much of ship will be opened, as possible. Describes ship’s history and naval exercises undertaken. Out - Music. TRACK 3- In -Rosie’s Run Ashore ... LT TONY RILEY of HMS Herald interviewed. Ship is ocean survey craft - describes equipment on board for carrying out survey work. Work used by cartographers at Taunton to make new charts. HMS Hydra is a similar ship - both ships will be open to public. Describes what the public will see- whole of upper deck, plotting table, chart room with surveying equipment, various displays. Music. JOHN REDHEAD of Royal Fleet Auxiliary Ship Blue Rover interviewed. Ship is tanker carrying 3 grades of oil. Other Auxiliary Ships supply other needs of Royal Navy. Describes Blue Rover ship open to public on Navy Days. Out - Music. [Box 7]
