In - Mr Callaghan asked about his memories of the Radio Victory studio which was formerly a school attended by Mr Callaghan for 4 years as a boy, school formerly known as Portsmouth Northern Secondary School. Recalls former masters, receiving the slipper, the headmaster’s study, worst and best subjects [worst science; best English and History]. Always liked economics. Impressions of Portsmouth as he knew it as a boy. Mr Callaghan in Portsmouth for election campaign, is asked about timing of election, election promises. Says Labour party manifesto undertakings can be carried out. Refuses to discuss Lib-Lab pact, wants a Labour government that will control prices and keep unemployment down. Is asked about possible reductions in Portsmouth dockyard - says level of employees will be maintained, but thinks all countries should reduce spending on defence, wants success for Strategic Arms talks. Portsmouth should be encouraged to diversify from defence. Will not comment on whether he would retire if did not win election. Believes is a great future for independent local radio.
