This is her speech: A ceasefire has been agreed on the Falklands. The Prime Minister says British troops have been ordered not to fire, except in self defence. Talks are going on between British and Argentine military commanders about a permanent ceasefire. Mrs. Thatcher left Downing Street to make the announcement personally in the House of Commons a few minutes ago. Her statement followed reports that the Argentine commander on the Falklands, General Menendez had met Britain’s Major General Jeremy Moore in Port Stanley this afternoon, and had then flown for talks with the military junta in Buenos Aires. The military high command in Buenos Aires says the ceasefire will last untill two o clock tomorrow afternoon, but there are hopes in Whitehall that there will be a full surrender sortly. This is how Mrs. Thatcher broke the news to the House of Commons just after ten o clock tonight. [Box 5]
