The man at the centre of the Mediterranean Cruise Row has resigned as chairman of Berkshire’s Education Committee. Gerald Hughes was severely censured in a top level report published last week which had looked into the distribution of free places on the cruise. Twelve officials including Mr Hughes and his wife joined the 900 Berkshire school children for the cruise, but they did not pay a penny towards it’s cost. Last night his local party re-selected Mr Hughes for the forthcoming County Council election, so why his decision to announce his resignation less than 24 hours later?
