Description

The Liberal group on Berkshire County Council have unveiled their alternative budget designed to keep the county’s rate rise below the 37-and-a-half per cent currently proposed. They were up until the early hours this morning putting the finishing touches to the plans which will go before county councillors on March the second, together with the spending proposals of the Tory and Labour groups. The Liberals are aiming to steer a middle course between the Tories plans which would mean a rate increase of 14 per cent and Labour’s 37-and-a-half per cent increase. And as they hold the balance of power on the council, they are confidently expecting their package to finally go through. The Liberal proposals would mean a rate increase of 27-and-a-half per cent up to 143 pence in the pound. But with it will go a big cut in plans to improve the condition of Berkshire’s roads, and there would be little improvement in other council services.
