Mike Matthews this week visits the village life of Chieveley. It lies 4 miles North of Newbury just off A34, in Berkshire. One single track with 8 interviews: 1- His first visit is to the Hare and Hounds Pub, and Matthews talks with the landlord. He talks about the pub history. 2- The home of Felicia Hill. She is a business woman and she talks to Mike Matthews about her small business. She sells knitted boutines for babies, for 0-2 years. The business has expanded over the last year, she sold 37.000 pairs of bouties. 3- Visit to the butcher Gerald, a German, ex farmer and ex navy man, now running a butchers. He talks about his business, about meat, German sausages and his life. 4- The home of Vera. She has lived in this village for a long time. She knows all the village history which goes back to the Romans. The meaning of the name Chieveley, it comes from Chives, cultivated a lot in this area. 5- Another visit to the Nappies Dispatches Company. Matthews talks to Richard the owner of the company and he describes his work. He explains how it started. 6- A visit to Bill, who has lived in the village all his life. He talks about its history and his memories of childhood and young life. 7- The most impressive house in the village is The Manor House built in 1620. Matthews talks to the landlord Christopher and he gives the history of the house of the records of the families that lived there. 8- The final visit is to a Baker’s Shop. Matthews talks to Andrew, the owner. He shows Mike how to make bread and also talks about his business. [Box 4]
