Description
Mike Matthews this week visit the village life of Arborfield and Arborfield Cross. It lies 5 miles South of Reading on the A327 in Berkshire. The village has a long association with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers - REME for short. One single - 7 interviews: 1- Visit to the Art Brick Shop where they make the old bricks working in a traditional way using a 100 year old technique. 2- One man has lived here for 60 years, Sid, who has a great love of horses. He knows all about the village history, and his participation in the 1st World War. 3- The most important place in this village is the REME. He goes to there base and talks to Brig. John. It was found in 1942. He explains the history of REME and talks about the soldiers, the students and the School. They have horses for military training. Their role is to maintain and repair the army’s electrical and mechanical equipments. 4- A visit to the second most important place in the village, The Bull, and a talk with Frank, the landlord of this famous pub. It is an old pub visited by Queen Victoria. It is exactly the same today as when Queen Victoria visited. 5- Visit to the home of Martin. He talks about the village history and the most important families who lived in this village, some still live here today. 6- Visit to the School of Electrical Engineers. He talks with staff-Sargeant. The school belongs to the British Army and he talks about the school, courses and students. 7- The last visit is to the Farm Animal and Grassland Research Institute, and talks with the deputy manager. He explains what is the function of this institution and how they research milk production and cow reproduction. [Box 4]
