- This week Mike Matthews visits Old Basing village. It lies 2 miles South East of Basingstoke in Hampshire. The village steaped in history with the famous battle of Old Basing House between 1643 and 1645. Today is surrounded by new housing estates. On Track 1, Matthews makes 2 interviews: 1- A trout farmer, Philip Perring. He explains the market for his fish farm. 2- Matthews talks to Derek, another fish farm owner, but this time for Fly Fishing. He teaches people how to be fly fisherman and he shows Matthews how to catch a fish in the lake. On Track 2, Matthews conducts 2 interviews: 1- With a vicar of the church, Rev. George Able. He tells the church history. 2- In a pub, he talks with the owner, Chris. It is a 400 year-old cottage 400 and he talks about the history of this house which has been in the family for years. Also talks about memories of his childhood in the village. On Track 3, there are 2 interviews: 1- The home of Peter, dated 1643. It is an oak building. It was once a barn and he talks about the history of this house and others nearby that were once barns. 2- The most important place in Old Basing is the Basing House, that is directly linked with the History of England. Mike Matthews talks to Dennis Jackson, the manager and he explains the history of this House. The history goes as far back as William, the Conquerer. The House was built between 1532 and 1561 on the site of Norman Castle. [Box 4]
