This week Mike Matthews in association with Vincent’s BMW visits the village of East Woodhay and East End, 6 miles South West of Newbury, in Hampshire. Only 1 Track with 6 interviews: 1- The home of Gordon. He runs a local 400 year-old pub. He talks about the pub’s history and says that it was once a barn. 2- The Homeguard Eastwoodhay Silver Band. Mike Matthews talks to Desmond Webb, the conductor. He says that this band had many names since 1884 when it started: Eastwoodhay Band, then Eastwoodhay Mechanics, then St. Martin’s Band, after local church, and after the 1920s, Eastwoodhay Silver Band, until 1941 became Homeguard Eastwoodhay Silver Band. The interview ends with the Band playing. 3- Another interview with Deny, a lady who loves and studies plants. She used to travel around the world to collect plants and bring them home. She talks about her travels, experiences and about plants. 4- Stargrove, one of the most impressive houses in the village, the home of Henry Cardin. He tells the story of the house which dates from 1423. 5- In the centre of the village, we can find the Church of St. Martin and Matthews talk with the verger and he explains what is to be a verger. He also tells the church history. 6- The last visit to the village is to the Old Rectory, one of the nicest house in Eastwoodhay. Matthews talks to Mark Milard. He restored the house after it fell into disrepair. In this house, there is a painting of Rev. Thomas Douglas Robinson, who built the house. Today, the owner of this house, Mark Milard became Lord of the Manor of the village. [Box 4]
