County chief executive Robert Gash had been ordered to carry out an inquiry into the allocation of free places on the two-week Mediterranean cruise after it was revealed two of the places had been taken by the Chairman of the education committee and his wife. The 900 youngsters on the liner had each paid 270 pounds for the trip, and the wives and husbands of teachers who went along, 600 pounds.
