Alternative title
The Murder of Isabel Schwarz [Part 2]
Date
1986
Description
Part 1. Violence on the Front Line: knives, iron bars, axes, bottles - just some of the weapons used by clients on their social workers. Often physically attacked for no apparent reason, social workers in many areas live under a constant shadow of intimidation, always liable to break out into savage violence. This programme contains astonishing interviews from some of the victims of such attacks, together with hitherto unpublished research on violence to social workers. The research claims each social worker can, on average, expect to be at least bruised and battered once a year.Part 2. The Murder of Isabel Schwarz: Isabel Schwarz was a social worker from Bexley in Kent, allegedly murdered by an ex-client in 1984. Bexley council, Isabel’s employers, held an internal enquiry into the killing. The proceedings were never published. Friends and relatives of the dead woman allege that the authorities concerned were incompetent and negligent. The programme is a detailed investigation of how Isabel died. On the strength of the programme, MP Harriet Harman accused the DHSS of having been grossly misleading and is raising the matter in the House of Commons once more, renewing her demand for an independent enquiry.
