Synopsis

Podcast. Howard Caygill’s explores the impact of popular sovereignty in Hamlet as it seems a necessary component to Shakespeare’s play. Claudius’ sovereignty is ambiguous not only because of Hamlet but also due to Laertes and the ‘general gender’ that follow him. Caygill deftly delimits sovereignty and weighs the possibility of resistance - while coming across an allusion to the most famous Danish king apparently missed by editors so far. The lecture is introduced and the Q&A session chaired by Professor Richard Wilson.
